3 Things To Stay On Top Of: A blog about hair loss after delivery.

Posted by Jade Boddie on

Postpartum hair loss occurs in about 85% of women after giving birth. Women will typically see hair fall in month 3 of postpartum. This is due to hormones becoming balanced and coming down from being elevated throughout your pregnancy. When dealing with postpartum hair loss you will want to stay on top of these main 3 things:

  1. Eating iron-rich foods
  2. Maintaining a healthy hair regimen is important.
  3. Most important is Keeping stress levels down

Iron-Rich Foods

Iron is one of the chemical elements in your body that is needed to be elevated and sustained during and after pregnancy. With blood loss after having a baby you can fall into iron deficiency if you already haven’t prior. Iron can be absorbed in various types of ways a few being. Meats, you can try Red meat, chicken, and turkey to provide you iron. If your not a big meat eater or don’t eat meat at all, then you do have alternatives such as green leafy vegetables (lettuce, collards, cabbage, spinach, etc). Chick peas, nuts, and seeds all are great ways to getting iron into your system.

Maintaining a Healthy Hair Regimen:

A hair regimen that’s healthy is a key element to your postpartum hair loss recovery. Having a baby is exhausting and at times the last thing on your mind is keeping up with your hair. I get it but apart of also not losing yourself after having a baby means attending to your own personal care. If you are not up for doing your own hair then a beautician would be your best route to helping you maintain your hair, but even with a beautician you want to be cautious of the styles you get.

Your hair is in a critical stage between 3-6 months sometimes 12 months so you want to make sure the beautician understands that low manipulation styles or styles that have the least amount of tension on the scalp is done. Styles to consider during this time would be crochet styles, knotless braids, 2 strand twists, flat twists, or even a wig that doesn’t require glue. What ever style you choose you want to make sure it doesn’t put the hair in an even more fragile state. Another important thing is, avoiding chemicals and heat these two things make up a bad combo for the hair during this transition and hormonal regulation.

If you are seeking good hair products to help with your postpartum hair loss I highly recommend using the Hibiscus Collection.

 Stress Free

The body goes through stress after birth both mentally and physically, so although physically you can’t stop the stress your body endures from bringing life into this world, it’s important that we aim to reducing mental stress. Of course that is easier said than done, but you do have the ability to try even if it’s baby steps. You can try out meditation which is a form of relaxing the mind and relieving stress just download a podcast platform and search meditation for stress. If you’re finding yourself feeling you don’t have the proper help with your little one, if you are in a financial position to do so hiring a nanny part time so you can get out the house for a little fresh air will make a difference in your stress levels. I also understand not everyone is in the position to hire a nanny so an alternative would be seeing if someone you trust could give you a break even if it’s just 1-2x out the month. Something is better then nothing and your mental is too important to just ignore any bit of assistance. Working out a few minutes out the day, creating couples time for you and your partner to bond, and most importantly getting an adequate amount of SLEEP! Sleeping when your baby sleeps will help you throughout the day also.
